Piano lamp or grand piano lamp? Good light for your music
When the light is poor, you lean towards the score – and the neck and shoulders come along. Good light on the music desk means calmer eyes and a freer body. Here is what to look for, and seven lamps from the German specialist Jahn.

Warm light, not cold
Choose a warm white light of about 2700–3000 Kelvin. It is calm for the eyes over long practice sessions and still shows the notes sharply. Cold, bluish light tires the eyes faster in the evening. Almost all Jahn lamps are in the warm range.
LED gives even light, uses little power and stays almost cold – so the lamp warms neither the piano nor your hands.
Upright lamp, grand piano lamp or clamp lamp?
| Type | Where it sits | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Upright piano lamp | Stands on top of the piano and bends down over the music. | Upright pianos |
| Grand piano lamp | Clamps onto or stands on the music desk. | Grand pianos, which have no flat top in front of the player |
| Music stand and clamp lamp | A small lamp for the music stand or desk. | Digital pianos, music stands and small spaces |
For the upright piano
Pianoforte has two reflectors that turn independently, so the whole spread of music is lit evenly. Flexarm has a bendable gooseneck, and Swing is the most affordable real piano lamp.

Try this tomorrow
Practise for ten minutes tonight with the light aimed at the music and the rest of the room dimmed. Notice whether your neck leans forward less than usual.
Questions
Which light colour is best for reading music?
Warm white light of about 2700–3000 Kelvin. It is calm for the eyes and shows the notes clearly.
Can a grand piano lamp be used on an upright?
Often yes, if it clamps onto the music desk. But a lamp standing on top usually lights the whole spread of music more evenly.
Does an LED piano lamp get hot?
Hardly. LED gives off very little heat, so the lamp warms neither the piano nor your hands.
How do I avoid glare?
Aim the light at the music, not at your eyes or the polished case. A lamp with an adjustable reflector or arm makes this easy.
