Silent piano: a real piano you can play in silence
By day, an acoustic piano with strings and hammers. At night you pull a lever, the hammers stop just before the strings, and you hear the piano in your headphones — with the same touch.
Kawai · Yamaha · Other brands · C. Bechstein
ZOZIZA has not tested every model. Specifications are the retailer’s or manufacturer’s.
Silent
A hammer-stop rail stops the hammers just before the strings. Sensors read the keys, and you hear a digital grand in your headphones.
TransAcoustic / AURES
The digital sound is played through the piano’s own soundboard. You can turn it down instead of off — and practise without headphones.
Will you feel a difference?
The keys feel slightly lighter in silent mode because the hammer does not hit the string. Most players adjust within a few days.
Kawai — AnyTimeX (ATX)
Kawai’s silent system is called AnyTimeX. ATX3 Light is the simple version; ATX4 has 90 voices, Bluetooth and sensors that measure the hammer’s movement instead of contacts under the keys. AURES 2 is Kawai’s hybrid that can send the sound through the piano’s own soundboard.

Questions
Silent piano or digital piano?
A digital piano is cheaper, lighter and never needs tuning. A silent piano is a real piano: strings, soundboard and an action that feels like the one at a conservatoire. If you practise seriously but live in a flat, silent is the best of both worlds.
Does a silent piano need tuning?
Yes, like any acoustic piano — usually once or twice a year. The digital sound in the headphones is always in tune.
Can my own piano get a silent system?
Many pianos can have a silent system retrofitted by a piano technician. Ask a local tuner whether your instrument is suitable.
